Basic information

Upper Secondary Technical School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (officially: Střední průmyslová škola elektrotechniky a informatiky, Ostrava, příspěvková organizace) is a secondary school based in the city of Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Upper secondary schools in the Czech Republic are generally designated for students aged 15-19 who successfully finished the nine-year educational programme at the elementary school, the attendance of which is compulsory for each child. The four-year secondary education is provided by a variety of educational institutions: gymnasiums (which prepare students for further studies at universities, the core subjects are more academic and more general; these schools can be compared to grammar schools or sixth forms), specialized secondary schools (with different fields of specialization: technical schools, business schools, nursing schools, agricultural schools, art schools, etc.), or lyceums (a mixture of gymnasium and specialized school, academic subjects are taught together with a few specialized subjects focused on economy, technology, health studies, etc.). All the above-mentioned institutions prepare students for the national, partly standardized leaving examination called maturita. This certification is a prerequisite for any university in the country. Secondary vocational schools offer a 3-year professional training for jobs where practical skills are more important than academic knowledge. Apprentices do not pass the maturita exam, but they obtain an apprenticeship certificate.

Currently, our school educates students in two fields of study, both finished by the maturita leaving exam:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Computer Science

Our school educational programme is based on the national curriculum document (the framework educational programme) and it develops the following:

  • general knowledge (Czech language and literature, English language, History, Civics, Physics, Chemistry, Ecology, Physical Education, Economy, Applied IT)
  • professional knowledge (technical subjects, see Electrical Engineering and Computer Science)
  • key competences (learning, cooperation, communication, problem solving, social and interpersonal relationships, citizenship, working)

Besides putting the accent on the quality of education in terms of employment of our graduates, we also prepare our students for further studies at different universities, mainly the technical ones:

We are fully aware that excellent results of our students are highly dependent on the technical and material background and the school environment. Check our modern classrooms here, see what our School Information Centre does, or simply take a virtual tour around the school premises.
